Tony Bishop named NJCAA Division III Player of the Year
Over the course of his two years with the Richland College basketball team, Tony Bishop has accomplished a lot, most notably helping lead the T-Ducks to a NJCAA Division III national championship this season.
As of April 14, you can NJCAA Division III Player of the Year to the Garland-native and Rowlett High School graduate’s long list of accomplishments.
“Tony has meant a lot to the program but really [it has been] this sophomore class,†Richland College coach Jon Felmet said. “They started something special here last year and we will continue building on that for years to come.â€
Over the past two seasons, Bishop averaged slightly over 14 points, around seven rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He also shot the ball well from the field, making 50.1 percent of his baskets this season.
According to Felmet, Bishop’s greatest strength was his rebounding.
“He was one, if not the best, rebounder in our league this year,†Felmet said. “His other strength would be his size. He was a tough matchup for a lot of teams, even at the national tournament.â€
And although Bishop hasn’t made a decision on where he will play next season, one thing is for sure: Felmet knows he will be playing somewhere.
“A person like Tony will be signed before too long because he is a good kid, good student and good basketball player,†Felmet said. “There are a lot of coaches that would feel the same way I do about Tony if they coach him for two years.â€
