Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Continuing Education Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching winners will be announced at the August 20 faculty convocation.
Richland College officially opened its Garland Campus on June 30 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new facility, located on the corner of Walnut and Glenbrook, serves as a location for area companies, organizations, and individuals to obtain highly specialized, contract corporate and workforce training and also functions as an educational gateway for student intake and outreach services for area residents and businesses to access main campus college credit programs and courses at Richland, Eastfield, and El Centro colleges.
“We are eager for this first facility on Richland’s new 21-acre Garland campus to serve as a nearby gateway to Garland-area residents to learn more about the many educational opportunities the DCCCD has to offer, especially at the main campuses of Richland, Eastfield, and El Centro Colleges,” said Steve Mittelstet, Richland’s president for the past 30 years.
The Richland College Emeritus Program offers many volunteer opportunities in tutoring. Here’s how you can help:
• Conversation Partners – help ESL students practice speaking English 1 hour/week on Wednesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. or Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. Call Dee Ann Benson at 972-761-6734.
• Reading Assistance Program (RAP) –help ESL students practice reading English 1 hour/week on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Call Chris Sanders at 972-761-6743.
• Tutor/Mentor Program – tutor Richland students in these major subjects: math, accounting, science, English writing, and history/government. Coordinate your schedule with the Center for Tutoring and Learning in Medina Hall. Call Chris Sanders at 972-761-6743 or visit Room C120 for more details about all programs.

A GREENRichland tip
Reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing a DART Employee Annual Pass program for Richland College employees. There are two options:
1) A pass for October-December. Payment deadline is Fri., Aug. 28 and is open to the first 22 respondents.
2) Join next year’s annual contract for 2010 by purchasing a pass for January thru December 2010. Payment deadline is Wed, Nov. 25 and is open to the first 50 respondents.

The Bath House Cultural Center presented “Art Beyond the Stage,” an art exhibition featuring a collection of renderings, costumes, art, and other theater objects. Regional designers for Dallas theatrical productions, including the work of Jennifer Owen, created the collection Richland College Coordinator of Technical Theatre Services. The exhibit ran at the Bath House July 11- August 8.
Ron Jones, adjunct music professor at Richland, will performed tunes from his new CD “INITIATIVE” on June 8 at the prestigious 55 Bar in New York’s Greenwich Village. The renowned 55 Bar is the spawning ground for jazz legends like Mike Stern and Wayne Krantz. “INITIATIVE” is a collection of originals merging jazz, blues and classic rock influences into an upbeat, enjoyable listening experience.
Jones, a graduate of the University of North Texas and the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University, teaches jazz improvisation and directs the jazz Ensemble at Richland.
Subtext Projects, a group of Fort Worth area curators and writers including RLC multimedia lab supervisor Mary Benedicto, presented “Everything Must Go.” The exhibition, which ran July 23-Aug. 6 2009 at the Fort Worth Contemporary Arts Center, is a storefront approach to the traditional art gallery experience. The works showcased address the prevalence of our society’s increased addiction to commodities and the marketing industries’ goal of eliciting desire, bringing to the forefront the idea that the language of marketing and advertising is part of the fabric of contemporary art.
Multimedia adjunct faculty member Robert Flowers’ newest project, “35mm: a collection of five digitally manipulated films,” was presented at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Centraltrak from June 20-July 6.

How are you?
My daughter Grace graduated from RCHS last week. She not only got her high school diploma but an Associate’s degree. During the graduation celebration, photographs of the past two years were projected on the big screen and signaled the end of her high school years. At that moment, my eyes filled with tears as memories came to mind. Time flies. I recalled the Grace took her Accuplacer because she wanted to take Government during Summer 1 at Richland College two years ago. She took her exam results to your office for course enrollment. At that time, we saw a lot of students lining up across the hall and asked you why they were there instead of enrolling for a summer class. You then introduced the concept of RCHS in a detailed way to us even though some students were waiting outside your office for summer classes enrollment. We were pretty amazed by such a new concept. At that time, I struggled a lot in deciding if RCHS was the right fit for my daughter. I asked you a question: Do you think a 16 year old girl can finish 2 years of classes and simultaneously get her Associate’s degree? Your answer was, “If she is determined to do it, she can make it.” Now Grace has proven your words to me by graduating with an Associate’s degree. She has even been admitted to Rice. I am taking this chance before the school closes to express our sincere thanks to you. If you had never provided your words of encouragement, I don’t think Grace would have had a chance to get into her dream university. Even though you are not lecturing in classes, you still provide good guidance to students. Thank you once again.
