I just wanted to take this time to let you all know of an option for your SECC donations that is very close to my heart, Camp Summit! I have been volunteering as a counselor there on the weekends for over two years now and not a day goes by that I am not thankful for my experiences gained through spending time at Camp Summit with its very special campers.Camp Summit is a year round camp for campers of all ages who are physical challenged, developmentally delayed, dual sensory impaired, and who have multiple disabilities. This camp means so much to so many people. A couple of weeks ago, I was paired with a 15-year-old camper named Jon who had cerebral palsy and did not communicate very well. All weekend he was also having health issues that caused him to stay up at night. Jon and I stayed up all night Saturday talking about normal things that 15-year-old guys talk about and just hanging out. When Sunday rolled around Jon had to head home and he kept asking me when he could come back. Just before he left he told me thank you and that he loved me and about how he couldn’t wait to see me in the spring.
It is an amazing feeling when you can have that kind of effect on someone’s life. Just think of what your contribution can do and how it can help many campers just like Jon.
Camp Summit is located in the charity guide on page 24. Their code is 280112 and their web site, in case you would like to know more about them, is www.campsummittx.org.
NOTE: The SECC campaign ends Oct. 31. Forms may turned into your division office or in Information Services at A104 (please call ext. 6194 if you need a form). Meet your monetary goal with 75% full & limited full-time staff participation by Wednesday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m.and receive 50% matching funds.

The RLC Police department hosted a Police Explorers meeting on Oct. 1. Officer Rebecca Willis presented a power point presentation and several videos to approximately 35 students, their parents, and fellow RLC police officers.
The group, established by the Boys Scouts of America, gives RLC and RCHS students the opportunity to shadow and learn about the law enforcement field alongside working professionals. Ideally, these students will enroll in a police academy once they turn 21 and continue to pursue a career in law enforcement.
During the month of October, the Explorers are raising funds with popcorn sales, known as “Poptober.” The next Explorers’ meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18. Upcoming events include a competition in April 2008. For more details, contact Rebecca Willis at 972-238-6174 or RWillis@dcccd.edu.

On Sept. 22, Richland collaborated with Vietnamese-American radio station (1600 AM), RLC Vietnamese Student Association, Vietnamese Association Mutual Services, Boy and Girl Scouts, Vietnamese Professional Society (VPS) and local business sponsors to hold the Asian Lunar Festival on campus. Over 5,000 visitors attended from the local community, as well as from Gainesville, Waco, Temple, and Sherman. The Asian Lunar Festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (it’s also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival).
Dan Dao was the driving force behind this successful community event. According to Dan, Asian culture is deeply embedded in traditional festivals. Like Christmas and Thanksgiving in the West, the Lunar Festival is one of the most important traditional events in Asian culture. Asian communities have the responsibility to preserve these traditions for future generations. And, more importantly, traditions such as this help define our identity in the community.
Others who made this community building event a success include Mira and Sylvester for housekeeping assistance, Officers Irma Soto and Robert Benavides for crowd control, and Hong Trong for facility support.

Thanks for going the extra, extra mile to make sure an employee was paid correctly. You didn’t have to do it, but you did, but you did, but you did, and I thank you!

I am writing to express heartfelt thanks for the SPECTACULAR job your staff did in the renovation of the music storage area last week. It was a BIG job that required many hands and hours. We are now ready for the new equipment to arrive and appreciate the expediency of your work that allows for a timely installation. We appreciate you all more than you know. You deserve Thunderduck applause!
Thanks again!

I wanted to thank the custodial staff for the clean up on the Performance Hall seats, it was very unpleasant working conditions with all the mold and all 488 seats that needed to be individually cleaned. Your crew did an amazing job getting the hall ready for events this week, it looks great.
Thanks.
Dear Professor O’Connor,
I was in your Biology Class 1409, in the Spring of 2006. (I was one of your older students; I had an older friend with me in your class). I am a senior at UTD now. I am in the teacher development program there and I just completed a “teaching elementary science” course. Our professor, Barbara Curry, spent the first day discussing our feelings about science. She asked us to think about science teachers we had in the past who were good and not so good. We wrote a “science autobiography” about our experiences with science instruction.
The next week, as we were turning in our papers, Prof. Curry asked us to share anything we wrote. She asked about the good and the bad. And, she mentioned a previous paper from another semester where a student wrote about you. My face lit up. I had just handed her a paper about you also.
She told me that I should definitely let you know what a difference you made in my education and life. So, I am telling you now. I know as a teacher you don’t get many letters from students telling you what a wonderful instructor you are, but I am saying you are one of the very best! I hope to be half as good as you someday. I learned so much from you, not only biology, but about “how to teach.” My friend and I discuss it all the time, that we want to be like you.
Thank you,
Sandra
Terri Nelson’s father passed away Oct. 5 at the age of 94. His funeral service will take place in his home state of South Carolina.
Gabriel Villareal (Media Technology) passed away over the weekend. He worked in AV Productions for the past several years and was always ready to take on tasks with a cheerful and caring attitude. In his part-time work here you might have seen Gabriel operating a video camera at Convocation or Graduation or delivering camera setups to classrooms. He also duplicated untold numbers of audio tapes and DVDs to support instruction. Funeral arrangements are pending.
