Institutional Effectiveness - Bao Huynh, Office of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness, helped identify 81 randomly selected Fall 2008 classes to participate in the national field test of the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE). Richland was one of 22 colleges selected nationally to participate in the fall 2007 SENSE pilot. The SENSE survey focuses on effective practices in areas strongly affecting new students’ success and will provide Richland with a systematic way to understand the critical early student experience.

Community and Economic Development - Richland joined more than 150 exhibitors at the sold-out 2008 Richardson Business Trade Show hosted by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce on May 29 at the Richardson Civic Center. Several Richland employees representing a wide range of course disciplines shared information with attendees and toured exhibit booths during this annual event. Richland Digital Forensics Instructor Zoltan Szabo showcased Richland’s new Digital Forensics program equipment, and Delores Elder-Jones of Community Outreach and Konley Kelley of Corporate Services coordinated Richland’s participation in the event.

Student Success - Richland student Beth Eckel recently was selected as the Ann Priest Writing Scholarship recipient for Fall 2008. The scholarship selection committee determined Beth’s submission to be deserving of this distinguished, talent-based writing scholarship to encourage creative expression, joy in the written word, and the value of writing as a way to learn and communicate.

Employee Success - Richland’s Poet Laureate, Professor Jerry McElveen, and Richland Adjunct English Instructor Martha Heimberg were recently selected to read their poetry at the 2008-09 DART/Richland Poetry in Motion kick-off event in Richardson’s Eisemann Center Main Lobby. Their poems will be displayed among the colorful, boldly designed posters featured in more than 600 buses and 60 light rail vehicles for the 300,000+ daily riders to enjoy each day during this year’s series.

More than 214 students have currently applied to enroll as incoming Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) juniors for the upcoming academic year. As students continue to apply, they are being added to an RCHS admissions waiting list. RCHS also was recently notified that five RCHS students are being considered as National Honor Merit Scholars.

‘New Mexico Workshop 14′ photography exhibit

“Red†by Frank Richards

Richland College Photo/Imaging professors Wayne Loucas and Roy Cirigliana present “New Mexico Workshop 14,” June 12 through July 12 in the Brazos Gallery at Richland College.

“New Mexico Workshop 14″ displays the portfolios of the professors’ 14th annual New Mexico photography workshop. While in New Mexico this May, the class traveled to sites including Rancho de Taos, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the town of Chimayo, Ghost Ranch and the red mesas of Georgia O’Keeffe country, Echo Amphitheater, and the Cumbres and Toltec Railway Station in the town of Chama. They followed the Turquoise Trail up to 11,000 feet at the top of Sandia Crest overlooking Albuquerque and spent time photographing Santa Fe.

Each student produced 25 or more work prints or digital files for a critique, then printed or output a 12-print, mounted and matted final portfolio. For the exhibition, each participating student will contribute three pieces from the workshop.

Exhibiting student artists from the workshop include:

Dan Richard Barber
Diran Demirjian
David Harris
Erin Hebert
Jon Hoggatt
Tasleem Khan
Devin McCullough
Tabitha Ortega
Frank Richards
Elizabeth Simonton
Deborah Williams

Works by professors Cirigliana and Loucas also will be shown. For more information and gallery hours, contact Randall Garrett at 972-238-6339.
