Institutional Effectiveness - Richland was recognized for its ongoing educational and community outreach contributions to the community during the recent Garland NAACP Winter Ball. Richland has been recognized this way by the Garland NAACP for the past 15 years. Richland Vice President Tony Summers and President Steve Mittelstet attended the black-tie gala and were invited to showcase the accomplishments Richland has made in this important ongoing partnership with the Garland community.
Community and Economic Development - More than 125 Richland art students and faculty and College Art Association National Convention participants gathered at a reception at the Latino Cultural Center on Feb. 20. During February, an exhibition at the Latino Cultural Center showcased 45 works in drawing, painting, design, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and digital art by Richland art students. The closing reception was held in conjunction with the 96th Annual Conference of the College Art Association, and the Latino Cultural Center Cardinal Points exhibition. Jan Ryberg, Richland guitar instructor, and the Richland classical guitar ensemble provided musical entertainment at the event.
Student Success - Richland art students Jeff Parrott, son of Richland Humanities Professor Dr. Lois Parrott, and Mary Goad recently took top honors in the 2008 League for Innovation Art Exhibition at Mountain View. Jeff won First Place and a Purchase Award for his work, Nothing Is What it Seems, and Mary won Fourth Place for her work, Double Stuff.
Employee Success - Richland Publications Manager/Graphic Artist Patricia Benter won two national-level Admissions Marketing Report awards among submissions from universities, colleges, and community colleges throughout the U.S. Her work was recognized with a Bronze Award for Class Schedules - Your Training Source, and Merit Award for Magazine Ad/Single - Richland Workforce Development Ad.
Richland Collegiate High School - Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) 2006/2007 yearbook staff received Honorable Mention/Theme - First in Class in the Taylor Publishing competition held among all high school yearbooks published last academic year. Congratulations go to Editor Ben Luong; Managing Editor Kristine Pollock; Photography Editor Chris Trujillo; Portrait Editor Aleena Spotswood; Activities Editor Aliss Pitts; Campus Life Editor Caroline Parker; Business Manager Andaleeb Igbal; and Staff Publishers Babak Heydari, Ariel Johnson, Jaclyn Kraeger, Amanda Perez, Chris Rempert, Leslie Revilla, Maggie Rowan, Wendy Smith, and Jasmine Thomas for their hard work and success. Congratulations also go to Lynn Proctor and Lea Ann Munkres, RCHS yearbook advisors, for their leadership with these RCHS students.

Community and Economic Development - More than 600 DISD Conrad, Lincoln, and Skyline high school students and parents participated in a lively, informative exchange with Richland Interactive Simulation and Game Technology (ISGT) program faculty in the Conrad High School auditorium on Tuesday. Emily Gray, Richland adjunct theatre instructor and local professional voice-over talent, joined ISGT program faculty Jeremy Roden and Dan Dao in providing career information and demonstrating software and techniques employed in this growing career industry. Following the presentation, Vice President Jean Conway and Executive Dean Martha Hogan interacted with Conrad faculty and administrators, discussing ways in which Conrad and Richland can partner in tech prep, dual credit, and college recruitment efforts surrounding the program.
Student Success - Congratulations to four Richland instrumental music students who took top spots in competitive auditions at the 2008 Texas Community College Band Directors Association (TCCBDA) All-State Symphonic Band and performed in concert with the honor band in San Antonio last week. Clarinetist Chad McCall earned the coveted first chair position out of 18 clarinetists selected statewide for this ensemble. Richland Flutists Tiffany Reed and Nayoung Jeon respectively earned third and fourth chair positions in the flute section, and Jeremy Hopkins earned the fourth chair position in the French horn section. Congratulations are also extended to Richland Instrumental Music Director Joe Perea and applied music adjunct faculty members Lance Sanford (flute), Sharon Deuby (Clarinet), and Lesley Harkey (French Horn) for their dedicated work in preparing these student musicians.
Employee Success - Richland SACS Faculty Liaison Mary Frances Gibbons continues to host valuable student learning outcomes assessment visits and workshops for representatives from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center, Collin College, Weatherford College, and the Wales, U.K. higher education system. Visiting vice presidents and deans from these various institutions requested and received in-depth looks at Richland’s assessment journey, assessment process, and how WEAVEonline supports Richland’s assessment efforts.
Institutional Effectiveness - In Richland’s continuing journey toward performance excellence, Richland actively participates in the Baldrige Award Recipient (BAR) organization. The group meets twice annually to discuss issues of common interest and to exchange best practices and ideas. Richland Dean of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness Fonda Vera represented Richland at the most recent meeting at the Montfort School of Business in Greeley, Colorado. Peter Senge, noted author and founding chairperson of the Society for Organizational Learning, was the special guest speaker at the event.
Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) seniors continue to receive good news relating to transfer offers to universities and four-year colleges. RCHS Senior Arun Mathew recently was accepted to junior-level status at Texas Tech University and Baylor University (with a $20,000 Baylor academic scholarship offer.)

Community and Economic Development - Richland’s African American Read-In 2008, Read, Believe, Achieve, & Succeed, sponsored by Richland’s African American Connection Organization and SPAR, featured successful guest author Sheliah Caddell-Dennis and a host of readers, poets, and vocalists who performed for a Performance Hall full of Richland students, faculty, and staff, as well as a DISD E.D. Walker Middle School teacher, her 65 students, and a DISD central office official. Congratulations and thanks go to Richland African American Read-In event planners Janice Bell, Tacia Dillard, Bobbie Harrison, Sandy Hawkins, Alisa Jones, Wilfred Manyango, Tanisha Shorter, Tameika Williams, and Bethany Wright for planning the inspiring event.
Student Success - Congratulations to Richland freshman student athlete and Garland native Tony Bishop who was named NJCAA Division III National Basketball Player of the Week, January 20-26.
Employee Success - Former Richland Thunderduck Basketball Coach Chester Story has been selected to be inducted into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Hall of Fame. Under Coach Story’s leadership, Richland’s 1999 Thunderduck Basketball Team won the Division III National Championship, and he shaped the lives of thousands of student athletes during his 42 years as a head coach.
Institutional Effectiveness - Richland has recently hosted a number of benchmarking activities on performance excellence. Northeast Texas Community College’s (NTCC) Vice President of Instruction and Student Development, accompanied by eight members of NTCC’s Strategic Planning Committee, spent February 8 exploring Richland’s approaches to strategic planning, employee culture, and professional development. February 9-15, Richland hosted a visit from Jonathan Cartmell, Director of Standards and Performance at Yale College, Wrexham, North Wales, representing both Yale College and Forum (the Welsh equivalent of DCCCD, with 23 colleges across Wales), to investigate excellence in leadership and the long-term use of the Baldrige Award process in embedding a “Quality” culture.
On February 7, Leadership Garland Class XXVII visited Richland for their Education Day Program, which included a campus tour to observe student services processes and a meeting with faculty in Richland’s new Interactive Simulation and Game Technology program. The visitors also heard presentations on Richland’s new LEED-Platinum Science Building, LEED-Gold Garland Campus, Corporate Services training opportunities, Emeritus Boomer ReBoot program, and Collegiate High School.
Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) Senior Zachary Howard recently learned he has been accepted to junior status at Baylor University and received a $20,000 merit scholarship. In addition, the list of RCHS seniors being admitted to junior status at The University of Texas at Austin (U.T.) continues to grow to include Lauren Anderson, Stephanie Herd, Charles Manion, Tony Nguyen, Justin Pham, Caitlin Taylor, and Melanie Weiler. Caitlin Taylor has just been notified that she is a National Merit Finalist, which entitles her to a $13,000 scholarship. Having already been accepted to the College of Biomedical Engineering at U.T., Caitlin has also been notified of her acceptance in U.T.’s Cockrell School of Engineering.
