Institutional Effectiveness - Fonda Vera, Richland Dean of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness, and Bao Huynh, Director of Institutional Research, were selected to deliver their Texas Association for Institutional Research award-winning presentation at the 2008 Forum for the Association for Institutional Research in Seattle this week. The title of their presentation was “Using Baldrige Discipline to Improve through Benchmarking and Environmental Scanning.” Dean Vera also presented on the topic of “Using Baldrige Discipline to Build a Culture of Continuous Improvement.”
Community and Economic Development - GREENRichland partnered with the North Texas Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council Events & Education Committee to host its spring education event, “Know Your Carbon Footprint,” on May 22 in Richland’s Performance Hall. Richland’s Chief Sustainability Officer and GREENRichland Co-Chair David Henry welcomed the group and gave an overview of Richland’s sustainability efforts. A carbon footprint is a tool that measures how much land and water area a human population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its wastes. Richland Director of Library Services Lennijo Henderson assisted attending architects and contractors on library computers to determine their carbon footprints and to learn how to take personal and collective actions to reduce carbon emissions.
Student Success - The Richland College Educators of America Student Organization culminated its academic year’s activities with a field trip to Texas Woman’s University (TWU). Sixteen Richland students were greeted by the TWU Director and Assistant Director of Admissions and received an overview of the admissions/registration, financial aid/scholarship application, and application/advising for Teacher Certification processes. Barbara Lerner, TWU P-16 Initiative Coordinator, addressed the students over lunch. The field trip, sponsored by Richland’s SPAR and the School of Teacher Preparation, introduced students to the university transfer experience and strengthened the Richland Teaching Excellence Partnership with TWU.
Employee Success - Richland Facilities Maintenance Assistant Donte Hoover successfully completed the Journeyman Electrical Exam Review as a part of his Continuing Education studies at Eastfield. He was awarded his Journeyman Electrical Certificate on May 7.
Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) students completed their school year on Friday with the end of May Term. The 129 graduating seniors and their parents were honored Thursday evening at the Senior Celebration held at the Atrium in Garland. In addition to congratulations from Board Chair Jerry Prater, RCHS Superintendent Steve Mittelstet, and RCHS Deputy Superintendent David Canine, the group heard from Valedictorian Caitlin Taylor and recognized Salutatorian Julio Molina. More than 70 RCHS seniors received Distinguished Achievement high school diplomas at the event.

Institutional Effectiveness - President Steve Mittelstet and the Richland leadership team were visited this week by two doctoral students separately conducting dissertation research on developing a culture of leadership, leadership competencies, and socio-cultural influences on both individual and organizational performance and healthy work/life balance. Marcia Pfeiffer, President of the St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley Campus and currently a University of Missouri–St. Louis Community College Leadership Program doctoral student, and Ginny Boyum, a University of Minnesota doctoral student, observed President Mittelstet engaged with faculty, staff, and direct reports to observe the nature of relationships developed in a servant leadership role.
Community and Economic Development - DCCCD Trustee Diana Flores, representing the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, joined the chair of the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce for a panel discussion on May 16 at Richland. The session was part of the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce’s 2008 Leadership Tomorrow’s 4th class meeting, hosted by Richland. Kay Eggleston, Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Economic Development, welcomed the class and introduced the first speaker, Brent Donham, Dean of Engineering and Technology. Senior Multicultural Center Advisor Thuy Anh Nguyen served as co-chair of the planning team and co-facilitated the closing session for the meeting with Dean of Instruction Zarina Blankenbaker.
Student Success - The chance at winning a fourth NJCAA Division III National Championship since 2002 ended Tuesday night after a 7-2 loss for the Richland Thunderduck baseball team. The student-athletes had an outstanding year, finishing the season with a 47-16 record, a 24-5 home record, and 105 home runs as a team. The Thunderducks were making their seventh appearance at the national championship tournament under Head Coach Joe Wharton, who coached Richland to three national titles from 2002-2004.
Employee Success - Fonda Vera, Dean of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness, has been appointed to the 2008 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Baldrige Award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. The board is composed of 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and government. Those selected as national examiners meet the highest standards of qualification and peer recognition and must complete a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.
As the 2007-2008 academic year nears a close for Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS), students remain meaningfully engaged in MayTerm classes, amassing a total of 936 credit hours. On May 15 and May 17, RCHS will conduct a New Student Orientation for the incoming class of RCHS juniors. To cap off this year of student learning success, RCHS will host a Senior Celebration at the Granville Arts Center in Garland on May 29.

Community and Economic Development - Adriana Rodriguez, Richland’s Director of Bilingual ESL/Education-Teacher Preparation, received an invitation from the Mexican Consulate in Dallas to participate in a ceremony recently held to welcome Mexican President Felipe Calderon in Dallas. The Mexican Government’s Institute for Mexicans Abroad, meeting outside of Mexico for only a second time, seeks to help immigrants in education and other issues by reaching out in the United States.
Student Success - The Richland Thunderduck baseball team and Coach Joe Wharton will have a chance to play May 17-22 for a fourth NJCAA Division III National Championship since 2002. This tournament play was made possible by the Thunderducks winning their first Metro-Athletic Conference championship since 2004. These successful student athletes enter the national tournament with a 45-14 record and a six-game winning streak.
Employee Success - Cindy Castañeda, Richland’s Dean of Ethnic Studies, Social Science, and Physical Education, was elected on May 10 to the Garland ISD School Board, At Large Place 4. Each of the seven GISD Board Members is elected at-large to three-year terms. Dr. Castañeda won among a field of two other contenders.
Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) Deputy Superintendent David Canine fulfilled his pledge to the RCHS Class of 2008. Challenging the class last year, he dared the students to earn more than $1 million in scholarship offers from four-year universities, promising to shave his head if they met that goal. On May 12, David upheld his promise in honor of the more than $2.5 million in scholarship offers to the 129 members of the senior class (an average of more than $19,000 per graduate). The special shearing event was covered on the 6 p.m. news on KXAS-TV Channel 5 and also appeared in the Richardson section of The Dallas Morning News.
