This week’s RLC update
Institutional Effectiveness - DCCCD Chancellor Wright Lassiter recently received a letter from Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas commending Richland for its responsible and competent performance on its 2007 Youth Services Contract for programs and services benefiting disadvantaged youth in Dallas County. The commendation urged Richland to submit a proposal for the continuance of its innovations, program enhancements, performance deliverables, and expenditure benchmarks for comprehensive youth services to be provided to Dallas County youth in 2008.
Community and Economic Development - Richland and the Hispanic Contractors Association de Tejas partnered in hosting 531 participants in Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)-10 Certification last Saturday on the Richland campus. Students from manufacturing, construction, and other industries attended 10, one-hour sessions learning safety techniques for the workplace, and approximately 369 of the participants were trained in Spanish. Students, volunteers, and trainers came from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana to support the venture of saving lives. OSHA and Texas Engineering Extension Services representatives were on-site approving, verifying, and preparing OSHA certification cards. Currently in Texas, an average of 1.7 construction workers die per day from construction-related injuries.
Student Success - Richland Thunderduck student-athletes in the following sports achieved grade point averages of 3.25 or higher this spring, qualifying them for Metro Athletic Conference Academic Awards. There were four in women’s soccer; one in women’s volleyball; one in men’s basketball; and seven in baseball.
Employee Success - In the spirit of Richland’s vision to build sustainable local and world community, Richland Journalism/Student Media Program Coordinator Tonya McMillion was recently featured on KTVT-TV Channel 11 in a story about her new green lifestyle. She recently sold her car and now commutes everyday to work via DART bus, DART rail, and her bike. View the Channel 11 story on her commute to work here. She has also initiated a GREENRichland blog for the college where bloggers can share stories of their green lifestyles and practices.

This week’s RLC update
Institutional Effectiveness - Fonda Vera, Richland Dean of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness, and Bao Huynh, Director of Institutional Research, were selected to deliver their Texas Association for Institutional Research award-winning presentation at the 2008 Forum for the Association for Institutional Research in Seattle this week. The title of their presentation was “Using Baldrige Discipline to Improve through Benchmarking and Environmental Scanning.” Dean Vera also presented on the topic of “Using Baldrige Discipline to Build a Culture of Continuous Improvement.”
Community and Economic Development - GREENRichland partnered with the North Texas Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council Events & Education Committee to host its spring education event, “Know Your Carbon Footprint,” on May 22 in Richland’s Performance Hall. Richland’s Chief Sustainability Officer and GREENRichland Co-Chair David Henry welcomed the group and gave an overview of Richland’s sustainability efforts. A carbon footprint is a tool that measures how much land and water area a human population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its wastes. Richland Director of Library Services Lennijo Henderson assisted attending architects and contractors on library computers to determine their carbon footprints and to learn how to take personal and collective actions to reduce carbon emissions.
Student Success - The Richland College Educators of America Student Organization culminated its academic year’s activities with a field trip to Texas Woman’s University (TWU). Sixteen Richland students were greeted by the TWU Director and Assistant Director of Admissions and received an overview of the admissions/registration, financial aid/scholarship application, and application/advising for Teacher Certification processes. Barbara Lerner, TWU P-16 Initiative Coordinator, addressed the students over lunch. The field trip, sponsored by Richland’s SPAR and the School of Teacher Preparation, introduced students to the university transfer experience and strengthened the Richland Teaching Excellence Partnership with TWU.
Employee Success - Richland Facilities Maintenance Assistant Donte Hoover successfully completed the Journeyman Electrical Exam Review as a part of his Continuing Education studies at Eastfield. He was awarded his Journeyman Electrical Certificate on May 7.
Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) students completed their school year on Friday with the end of May Term. The 129 graduating seniors and their parents were honored Thursday evening at the Senior Celebration held at the Atrium in Garland. In addition to congratulations from Board Chair Jerry Prater, RCHS Superintendent Steve Mittelstet, and RCHS Deputy Superintendent David Canine, the group heard from Valedictorian Caitlin Taylor and recognized Salutatorian Julio Molina. More than 70 RCHS seniors received Distinguished Achievement high school diplomas at the event.
