Institutional Effectiveness - The Texas Association for Institutional Research (TAIR) recently selected Richland researchers Fonda Vera and Bao Huynh as winners of the Best Presentation Award at the 2008 TAIR Conference in Galveston, Texas. The title of their presentation was “Using Baldrige Discipline to Improve through Benchmarking and Environmental Scanning,” and the award entitles each of them to a paid registration at the 2008 Association for Institutional Research (AIR) Forum in Seattle, Wa., and the opportunity to present their paper at the forum.
Community and Economic Development - Seventeen Dallas County Manufacturers Association (DCMA) companies were honored at a reception where the Garland City Manager, Garland ISD Superintendent, DCCCD Board Chair Jerry Prater, and Richland Vice President for Resource Development/Workforce Training Mehrdad Haroutunian expressed their appreciation to the participating companies and emphasized how vital manufacturing is to the continuing economic viability of Garland. As such, Garland Mayor Ronald Jones and five Garland City Council members proclaimed March 13 as Manufacturing Day in Garland to honor the members of the DCMA. This unique partnership among the Garland Chamber, Richland College, City of Garland, and Garland ISD enhances the DCMA’s ability to focus on economic development and manufacturing growth, while accessing customized training and grant-funded training opportunities through Richland. During 2006-07, Richland delivered more than $700,000 in grant-funded, customized training for 700 employees of the 12 DCMA member companies. These connections are proving vital to program development for the new Richland College - Garland Campus that will provide Garland companies even better access to a skilled and qualified workforce in the future.
Employee Success - Richland Vice President David Canine and Director of Community Relations Debbi Richards successfully co-hosted the second week of the Council for Resource Development (CRD) Specialist Training in Washington, D.C., last week. The CRD planning team and 26 interns made professional contacts with their respective U.S. House and Senate representatives and visited with National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Department of Labor, Department of Education, AACC, ACCT, Foundation Center, and Howard Community College representatives during the training week. Awarded an honorarium for their successful training leadership, David and Debbi donated the honorarium back to CRD to jump start the 2009 Specialist Training Scholarship Fund.
Richland Collegiate High School seniors Christopher Rempert and Jasmine Thomas were elected in their respective voting precincts as delegates to the Senate Democratic Caucus on March 29.
