Community and Economic Development – In Richland College’s continuing efforts to recruit additional minority faculty, the college recently hosted its third annual Adjunct Faculty Recruitment Fair, as advertised in The Dallas Morning News and area ethnic newspapers, such as Al Dia and The North Dallas Gazette. Approximately 200 potential adjunct instructors completed employment applications and discussed with academic deans and program coordinators the variety of teaching opportunities available at Richland College. Attendees were asked to complete evaluation forms rating their satisfaction with the fair and identifying where they learned about the fair.
Student Success – Four members of the Richland College Symphonic Wind Ensemble were recently selected to perform with the prestigious Texas Community College All-State Symphonic Band. Music students Tiffany Reed (flute), NaYoung Jeon (flute), Chad McCall (clarinet), and Jeremy Hopkins (French horn) were selected among a statewide pool of more than 180 musicians from 33 different community colleges. These student musicians will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio in February.
Employee Success – Richland College Admissions/Student Records staff presented two workshops at the recent 86th Annual Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Conference (TACRAO) in Addison. Becky Witherspoon, Mary Petterborg, Wanda Hawkins, and Nader Dowaik presented Degree Audit Training for Academic Advisors, featuring the planning and implementation of this successful Richland College training program. Oscar Lopez, Cindy Berry, Kurt Albach, and Winona Whited presented Hurry Up and Wait…A System to Manage Registration Lines, focusing on the implementation of Richland College’s successful electronic pager system used by students and academic advising staff to ease waits during peak registration periods.
Institutional Effectiveness – Richland College’s Baldrige-based practices are reaching an international audience in an article entitled Wondering about Excellence… published in the Autumn 2007 international publication of BROADCAST: The Journal of the Scottish Further Education Unit. The article’s author, John McCann, Deputy Chief Executive of the Scottish Further Education Unit, writes of the experiences and impressions of the team of Scottish colleges who participated in a highly successful benchmarking visit at Richland College last May.
