This week’s RLC news update

Community and Economic Development - The Shaw Contract Group’s Shaw Green Edge initiative recently recognized the good stewardship of Richland College in its environmentally sustainable efforts in recycling 54,736 pounds of used carpet that would typically have been sent to a landfill. The carpet was recycled using the Waste to Energy method which is recognized as an environmentally safe, economically viable recycling option for carpet. By generating power for use in homes and businesses, Waste-to-Energy compliant facilities offset the burning of fossil fuels and reduce emissions from the norms expected of coal.

Student Success - The Richland Career Services Center hosted its annual Fall Job Fair on October 17, allowing hundreds of interested students to interact with over 55 area employers seeking qualified applicants for both full-time and part-time employment opportunities in the Metroplex. Richland Career Services advisors were available to provide résumé and interview critiques and guidance assessment to help students identify career interests and aptitudes to aid them in their employment searches.

Employee Success - Richland Librarian Amy Gonzalez Ferguson has just been published in the Texas Library Journal. Her article, Get Vertical with Search: Improve Your Patron’s Web Searches with Vertical Search Engines, appears in the Fall 2007 issue. (Copies of the article are included.)

Institutional Effectiveness - Based on a thorough review of the visiting site team’s survey report conducted in March and Richland’s survey responses, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Commission on Credentialing, responsible for the accreditation of pharmacy residencies and pharmacy technician training programs throughout the country, voted to approve the Richland Pharmacy Technology program for reaccreditation through 2013. The commission’s mission includes formulating and recommending changes in standards, assessing program adherence to compliance of the standards, and recommending accreditation status of programs. The ASHP group consists of appointed individuals who have been actively involved in accredited pharmacy residency or technician training programs.
