Richland College to host teacher symposium Sept. 21

Richland College’s Teacher Preparation Institute is hosting a Symposium for Teachers and Paraprofessionals at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 21. The workshops are open to area elementary and secondary school administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and aides. Dr. Kathy Escamilla will be the featured speaker and will cover topics including the challenges of a diversified student population, mandated test, and improving the school’s performance ratings.

Escamilla is a professor of education in the division of Social, Bilingual, and Multicultural Foundations at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is also a recognized expert in and advocate for the academic success of English language learners.

She is a member of numerous professional education organizations including the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the American Education Research Association. Escamilla has received several awards including the Mayoral Award for Academic Achievement at the Mayor’s Summit on Latino Education and the Citizen of the Year Award by the National Association for Bilingual Education.

The cost of the symposium is $30 and includes a snack, a children’s performance, and conference materials. Group rates are available.
