Richland College travel, expo, and meeting management student wins international award–from a hospital bed

Traci Crews Traci Crews, a Richland College Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management student, placed as a semi-finalist at the International Delta Epsilon Chi Career Development Conference and Competition last month, despite spending part of the competition in a hospital bed. The competition, held in Orlando, FL, tests students’ management, marketing, and planning skills needed to succeed in the travel and tourism industry.

After completing the first round of the competition, Traci’s vision began to fail and she began to experience a great deal of pain due to the effects of a chronic illness that strikes without warning. Her Dallas physician ordered her to the nearest emergency room for treatment and testing. The next morning, she learned she had qualified for the semi-final round of the competition.

Traci’s doctors would not release her to participate in the competition. After a flurry of inquiries and consultations with the competition judges and Traci’s doctors, she was permitted to compete at the hospital by phone. A representative from the competition even came to the hospital to administer the case study.

Traci’s symptoms were eventually brought under control, and she was released from the hospital later that evening. Traci arrived at the awards ceremony just in time to receive her semi-finalist medal.

For more information about Traci and her award or Richland’s Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management program, contact M.T. Hickman at mthickman@dcccd.edu or 972.238.6097.
