On Saturday, April 21, the unique melodies of steel drums come alive at the fourth annual Carnival of Steel music festival at Richland College, from 12-7 p.m. on the east side of campus.
North Texas’ premier steel band festival will feature performances by area high school, college and professional steel bands. Carnival of Steel is a family-friendly event as well as a cultural experience. Guests can enjoy exotic Caribbean food while experiencing the living art of steel band music. Festival goers also have a chance to shop at exhibition booths and meet the people who hand craft these unique instruments from 55-gallon oil barrels.
A ticketed headline concert at 8 p.m. in Fannin Performance Hall will feature the Richland College Steel Band, directed by Joe Perea, followed by the Texas Symphony of Steel with special guest Gary Gibson. Advanced tickets are $5, $10 at the door, and may be purchased at the cashier’s window in Thunderduck Hall or by phone at 972-238-6326.
The Carnival of Steel is part of the Richland College Celebrates the Arts series and is sponsored by the Texas Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and the Candlewood Suites. Richland College is located at 12800 Abrams Road in Dallas. For general information, call 972-238-6194 or visit www.richlandcollege.edu/carnivalofsteel for a complete schedule of events.
